Free Ai Weiwei

Since then, there has been no word as to their whereabouts until now. A statement was released this afternoon from a state-run global times newspaper breaking China’s media silence on the situation, stating that ai weiwei has no respect for the laws of his country, and that he is on the verge of pushing the limits of legal tolerance. for this, Ai Weiwei’s behaviour will be evaluated and he will pay a price for his actions.

The artist is best known for his political activism revolving around the earthquake that hit china’s sichuan province in 2008. Since then he has faced physical abuse from authorities, his new studio was recently demolished and his name and work
has been censored throughout china among other events and incidents.

Ai Weiwei’s work ‘sunflower seeds’ is currently on show at the tate modern in london. In may his ‘cirlce of animals / zodiac heads’ world tour will begin in the grand army play near central park in new york.

With finals coming, I know I am in need of some serious zzzzzz's . Check out these weird beds. One's even a book!

Movie Barcodes

Check out these absolutely wonderful
images that portray movies into one squished image.
they squish all the colors of a movie
and put it into one bar code.

ali and i did a lesson plan yesterday and got the other group
looking at these,
and i think it's really interesting to see moods conveyed within a movie just through color.
enjoy!

Paul Fusco // Chernobyl

This is a chilling photo essay by photographer Paul Fusco centered around the children of the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown (1986/Ukraine). It's graphic, disturbing, surreal, and REAL.

With the recent disaster in Japan, there has been a bit more talk about Chernobyl lately and I found this pretty intriguing... if you have a few minutes, read this article and then watch and listen as Fusco talks about his experience working on such an assignment as photographing the victims of Chernobyl. Pretty powerful...

Crane Arts ! !!

Not sure how many of you all are Philadelphians or may end up there, but regardless, you should check our the Crane Building in North Philly. Besides being a really great old building, it is home to an unbelievable community of all things art. From galleries and private studios to a sweet printshop (BIG ART DAY!'s Zach Lindenberger runs Second State Press. which is located in the basement of the Crane), there's a lot to check out. /// CRANE ARTS

It's also home to the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center, which is a great resource for workshops, visiting artist lectures, exhibitions, and competitions to enter. And even better, it's nonprofit. >>> You would be CRAZY not to check it out here.

Be sure to read the info on the open call for their 2nd Annual Contemporary Photography Competition & Exhibition. The juror is Peter Barberie, who happens to be the curator of photography at the Philadelphia Museum of Art -- not a bad guy to have look at your work. DO IT!

Over and out.

ECKHAUS

Just an FYI..

ECKHAUS is having an art auction tomorrow from 5-7!!!

Peters Valley Craft Center

I am currently in the running for the assistantship in the photography department at Peters Valley this summer. They teach classes to aspiring (and successful) artists and craftspeople. I would be in charge of the darkroom and digital lab, while taking classes. I took a blacksmithing class last summer. It was a wonderful experience and I highly recommend it. There is a work-study program to bring the cost of classes way down.

Blurb

Blurb was easy to use once you got past the cover which they treat like the holy grail. I got the image wrap and it turned out nice other than no details in the black which do exist in my files. The rest of the book had the same problems with blurb it seems you need to WAY over compensate for black or dark areas including dark blues or you will loose detail. The only other problem I had was that blurb has these guides that tell you what may or may not be cut off during the process of actually making the book which are the top bottom and edge of the page you can turn this guide on or off and it is pink, problem being I used them just in case and some of my stuff still got cut off not much but enough that a few of the letters/notes are missing a few letters off the edge. The note next to the guides just says "don't put anything important in the pink" but if you don't want it missing I would keep it at least a quarter inch in from the pink. All in all I do like the way it turned out it could have had more detail and nothing too important was lost it is just a bit annoying when you a lot of hard work and information is missing. I would use it again just realizing that there needs to be compensation for dark areas.

Lockheed Martin Photos from WWII

The website tells it all, but these were photos of what the US Government did to protect Lockheed during WWII from Japanese bombing... very interesting photos.

a new class project?

would anyone be up for THIS
as an outside class blog project????!

i think it's fun.

Mix Book

I didn't really have any problems with mix book. I found it easy to use and they shipped it to me really fast. The only problem i have with my book is that the picture on the cover is not centered. It runs off into the binding a little bit. I checked back on the website and I have it centered on the page but maybe they didn't take into account the space for the binding. And the last page where the mixbook logo is doesn't bother me like it did to others. I didn't even notice it.

wrapping up!

i know we only have so many weeks left,
and if you're like me
you're certainly feeling the pressure and burdens of all the work!

so just take a moment
and laugh at all these
because i did.
I thought these images were intriguing, despite the "tutorial" form in which they appear. It might be interesting to explore different kinds of imagery besides landscape's horizon lines using the same technique. They also made me feel a bit dizzy.

MyPicTales

MyPicTales did a pretty decent job with my book after clearing up the coupon mishap (which may have been the dealist's fault). Besides the blotchiness in the white areas on my cover, the images appeared as promised on the preview. I would go through them again, but, like we talked about in class, be careful with putting vital information in the binding of two-page-spread images.
-Heather

The interface was generally easy to use. It wants to randomly select formats for you...but you can just click the page set up you want. I was not impressed by the print quality. I see some banding in the images. The colors and histograms seem very accurate. Overall I think I would try a different company.

Alternative art making materials! - Taxidermy

Ok, so this is not really related to book art, but I  thought it revelent because we are talking so much about alternative materials, or looking at the act of making art differently in this hand crafted project.

Drawing vs. Photography

This is a really cool idea. Check it out!

Kevin Bauman

"The abandoned houses project began innocently enough roughly ten years ago. I actually began photographing abandonment in Detroit in the mid 90’s as a creative outlet, and as a way of satisfying my curiosity with the state of my home town. I had always found it to be amazing, depressing, and perplexing that a once great city could find itself in such great distress, all the while surrounded by such affluence...
Brush Park, on the outskirts of Detroit’s entertainment district was always an area of interest to me. For as long as I can remember the area, housing large houses and mansions, sat largely abandoned just a stones throw away from the Fox Theater, and not far from Wayne State University, the Masonic Theater, and even the central business district. How could an area that was obviously once a wealthy enclave in the city become an example of the downfall of American cities?
As the number of images grew, and a documentary style emerged, I switched from mostly black and white, to color, and decided to name the series 100 Abandoned Houses. 100 seemed like a lot, although the number of abandoned houses in Detroit is more like 12,000. Encompassing an area of over 138 square miles, Detroit has enough room to hold the land mass of San Francisco, Boston, and Manhattan Island, yet the population has fallen from close to 2 million citizens, to most likely less than 800,000. With such a dramatic decline, the abandoned house problem is not likely to go away any time soon."

Everyday at McDonalds

What originally started out as an argument over how long it would take for a McDonalds Happy Meal to get moldy, turned into a scientific experiment and eventually a fascinating photographic project.
On April 10, 2010, Sally Davies, a New York City photographer, purchased a Happy Meal with the plans of letting it sit out on her coffee table, uncovered, to prove a friend wrong who was convinced it would get moldy and rot after only a few days.
Sally began photographing the burger and fries daily and posting the images on her Flickr. After a week, the Happy Meal’s appearance looked virtually unchanged. This was when Sally realized two things—first, that her friend was indeed wrong and second, that she should hang onto the meal to see just how long it would actually take to rot.
180 days later, Sally had acquired 27 images of the burger (after the first ten days, she began photographing the meal about once a week). The scary part: the first photo of the fresh burger and fries looks almost identical to the burger and fries photographed a half a year later.
How does that sit in your stomach?

Pinhole Screen Printed Camera

This website has to be translated from Portuguese, but it has instructions on how to make a pinhole camera from scratch. This could be a really interesting way of assembling a photo book...

Since being published it has been featured on Japanese TV, Newspapers, major news & blogsites like yahoo news, coolhunting and fffffound. This book won this years NY ADC silver cube.

The artist took found glass, did the pictures in ink, then used clear duck tape for hinges. Goes to show you can use anything to make a book!

Someone really needs to make this.^^^^I'm acutally considering it as a side project. But maybe narrow it down to just one book.
Book of Seconds: Memory Loss
By Robbin Ami Silverberg
New York: Dobbin Books, 2005. Edition of 15.
14 x 12". 52 pages bound like a notebook. Front board covered in colored paper with abstract design.
This book records memory change [presumably in the artist] over time. Interspersed throughout are small post-it notes (of handmade paper) with short texts that reveal progressive change in memory, specifically having to do with language. The initial two sections examine forgetting names and confusing of word order. The third section asks: If words and language go, what then? Can ideas exist without them?
The post-its have been placed on a series of translucent leaves of hemp paper, which have significant folds and a crisp rattling sound that creates an audible background, a kind of poetry, to the reading.
$1,500

Thought this was pretty neat.
